SERVING THE MIDLAND-AREA COMMUNITY SINCE 1948

Cancer Services dates back to the 1940s when a few concerned citizens began collecting funds to fight cancer. In March 1948, the group was incorporated as Midland County Cancer Society. Their mission was to control the disease of cancer through early detection, education, and service to patients. This included maintaining the radium supply for Midland Hospital, distributing educational leaflets, offering films for loan, and providing medical equipment for use in home care. Volunteers helped in a variety of ways, such as making bandages. The group worked closely with the Midland County Health Department to improve the health of the community.

That was before, and times have changed with changing needs. We currently offer a diverse range of unique services to cancer patients, such as financial aid, support groups, private counseling, transportation assistance to appointments and treatments, and non-medical supplies such as wigs, prostheses, and food supplements.

In addition, in 2009, we launched the Maria Mencia Cancer Caregiver Support Network. It was founded by Luis Mencia in memory of his late wife, Maria, to support caregivers of cancer patients. It is operated in partnership with MyMichigan Health and exemplifies how Cancer Services turns innovative ideas into highly valued realities.

All services are free and apply to all income levels.

One fact remains the same throughout our history: We continue to deeply care for our clients, offering a helping hand with a compassionate, personal touch. Every day, we work hard to make sure their basic, non-medical needs are met and will continue to build a stronger, healthier community.
